The last decade had nine of the ten warmest years on record. Since 1950, emissions of carbon dioxide in the world have increased at an alarming rate, from two billion metric tons per year to nearly seven billion in 2005. The continuous rise in temperatures is triggering a rise in oceans’ levels that could reach devastating levels by 2100, with major consequences for densely populated coastal areas, food production and biodiversity.
Entrepreneurs are utilizing the carbon markets as an important tool to finance projects that assist in the mitigation of climate change. In addition, companies are finding ways to emit less carbon, which in time can be an important competitive advantage. An entire services industry is forming to assist companies with legislation compliance, appropriate environmental procedure development, and hazardous materials processing or convertion of waste into fertilizer and recycled materials.
